Types Of Tawaf

Tawaf is a Wajib act that is needed to be performed by all the pilgrims who want to perform Hajj or Umrah. Tawaf means circulating the Kabba seven times in an anticlockwise direction and is an essential ritual to be performed by all which starts from Hajr E Aswad to Hajr E Aswad. Mainly there are Five Types of Tawaf and these are as under:

• Tawaf-ul-Qudoom
• Tawaf-al-Ziyarah Or Tawaf-al-Hajj
• Tawaf-al-Widaa
• Tawaf-ul-Umrah
• Nafal Tawaf
1. Tawaf-ul-Qudoom
It is a Tawaf performed by the pilgrims who have decided to perform Hajj Qiran and Hajj Ifrad. Tawaf-ul-Qudoom is also known as Tawaf of Arrival, Tawaf al-Tahiyyah (Tawaf of Greeting). This Tawaf is mandatory to be performed by all the pilgrims who want to perform Hajj Qiran and Hajj Ifrad. This Tawaf is performed by the pilgrim upon arriving at Makkah. As narrated by Aisha (RA) The first thing the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did on reaching Makkah, was the ablution and then He performed Tawaf of the Kaaba, and that was not Umrah (alone but Hajj-al-Qiran).
2. Tawaf-al-Ziyarah or Tawaf-ul-Hajj
This Tawaf is also known as Tawaf-al-Ifadhah and is performed in the Hajj. This Tawaf is performed by the Pilgrim between the Dawns of 10th Dhul Hijjah to the sunset of 12th Dhul Hijjah after Qurbani and before returning to Mina to perform Rami Al-Jamarat.
3. Tawaf-al-Widaa
This Tawaf is also known as Tawaf-ul-Sadr and is considered as the Farewell Tawaf usually performed at the end of the Hajj. This Tawaf is Wajib and if a pilgrim doesn’t perform this Tawaf their Hajj becomes void. The Messenger (PBUH) said; Let none of you leave Makah before making a Tawaf around the Kaaba, as the last of Hajj rites.
4. Tawaf-ul-Umrah
This Tawaf is performed by the pilgrims who have decided to Perform Umrah or Hajj al-Tamattu. This Tawaf is usually performed only by the pilgrim who performs Umrah or Hajj journey; however, this Tawaf is to be performed in Ihram.
5. Nafal Tawaf
This Tawaf can be performed anytime by the pilgrims as this is a voluntary Tawaf. So a pilgrim performing Nafal Tawaf doesn’t need to put Ihram or do any procedure of Umrah; they simply can perform this Tawaf in their normal attire that too anytime during their entire Umrah journey.
