Umrah Hair Cutting Rules

Umrah is a journey of faith for a true believer with numerous benefits and rewards. Umrah is a voluntary act but is Sunnah to be performed. However in order to perform Umrah you have to do some steps and among those steps is the Hair cutting after Umrah. This is the last step of Umrah and is commonly known as Halaq or Taqsir. Halaq and Taqsir are two rituals of Umrah which are needed to perform to complete the journey of Umrah. However, an Umrah Pilgrim has to do one of the rituals among Halaq or Taqsir as it is obligatory and marks the ends of the pious journey of Umrah.

Halaq in Umrah

Halaq in Umrah means to shave the head completely. It is a Wajib act and is applicable to be performed by men only. The cutting of the hair should be done in the boundaries of Haram and once it is done an Umrah Pilgrim comes out from the state of Ihram.

Taqsir in Umrah

Taqsir in Umrah means to trim or cut hair. One can also trim at least One-quarter of the hair after performing the Umrah Rituals. Allah Orders us in the Quran to come out of Ihram after performing the essential rites by Shaving our Heads or Cutting Our Hair Short. Allah says, after that; let them bring to an end their state of consecration (ihram) with your heads shaved or your haircut short.

Women also need to trim their Hair but not exceed more than a Fingertip. The cutting of the hair should be done by her Mahram or by ladies. The cutting of the hair should be done in the Boundaries of Haram during Umrah to come out from the state of Ihram. Even if a woman has short hair, she also has to trim her hair in order to complete her Umrah pilgrimage and to successfully exit the state of Ihram.

Is It Necessary to Cut Hair after Umrah

Cutting Hair after Umrah is a Wajib act and is needed to be performed by all the pilgrims who are in the state of Ihram. Cutting of Hair includes Halaq or Taqsir and it depends on a pilgrim what he wants to do. However, for Women she has to trim her hair not more than a finger tip.
As mentioned by the famous scholar Ismail Ibn Kathir (peace be upon him), “In a dream, Prophet P.B.U.H, saw himself entering Makkah and performing Tawaf around the House. He told his companions about this dream when he was still in Madina; some of them indeed had their head hair shaved, while some of them had their head hair shortened.”
The Prophet’s dream came true during Hajjatul Wida, when he shaved his head completely. He started the Halq ritual, by first shaving the right side of his head and then moving towards the left. After completing Halq, the Prophet (PBUH) highlighted the importance of these rites by invoking mercy on those who perform Halq three times, and offered supplication once for those performing Taqsir.
Also, Abdullah ibn Umar I narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari, “The Prophet (PBUH) said, “O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their heads shaved.” The people said, “O Allah’s Messenger! And (invoke Allah for) those who get their hair cut short.” The Prophet (PBUH) said, “O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their heads shaved.” The people said, “O Allah’s Messenger! And those who get their hair cut short.” The Prophet said (the third time), “And to those who get their hair cut short.” Nafi said that the Prophet had said once or twice, “O Allah! Be merciful to those who get their heads shaved,” and on the fourth time he added, “And to those who have their hair cut short.”
